SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – Acting United States Attorney Héctor Ramírez Carbó announced the creation of the Puerto Rico Interagency Fraud Enforcement Task Force, bringing together federal law enforcement agencies, state partners, and inspectors general to strengthen efforts to identify, investigate, and prosecute fraud against government programs and American taxpayers.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office hosted the first task force meeting on Thursday, October 15, attended by federal prosecutors and representatives from participating agencies. The meeting focused on establishing an all-hands approach to investigations and prosecutions, expanding intelligence and data sharing, discussing efficient methods for identifying fraud schemes, analysis of investigative leads, and ensuring law enforcement resources are directed toward significant fraud schemes.
“Fraud targeting federal government programs steals from taxpayers and deprives intended recipients of essential resources, weakening the impact of programs meant to serve the public,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Héctor Ramírez Carbó. “Our office—working alongside our federal, state, and local partners—will apply every criminal, civil, and administrative tool at our disposal to uncover fraud, stop it, and hold offenders accountable for the harm they cause.”
The agencies joining the Puerto Rico Interagency Fraud Enforcement Task Force include:
The Puerto Rico Interagency Fraud Enforcement Task Force employs an all-hands approach and leverages expertise across various federal programs to advance the Department of Justice’s priorities and initiatives. Its mission is to deter fraud, waste, and abuse of federal funds, safeguard taxpayer dollars, and ensure that federal programs reach their intended recipients.
Partner agencies will invest all available resources to jointly investigate and prosecute anyone who steals from the American public.
These efforts support the U.S. Department of Justice’s nationwide initiative, and creation of the National Fraud Enforcement Division (“Fraud Division”), to enhance coordination among federal agencies and strengthen the government’s ability to detect and prosecute fraud.
